After returning from Umrah on Saturday night, former Vice President and presidential candidate Atiku Abubakar led a delegation to pay a solidarity visit to former Minister of Justice and Attorney General of the Federation, Abubakar Malami, SAN. The visit provided an opportunity for Atiku to engage with a key figure in Nigeria’s legal and political arena.

During the visit, Atiku addressed the issue of political detentions, specifically calling for the release of former Kaduna State Governor, Mallam Nasir El-Rufai, and other individuals held on political grounds. He stressed that no Nigerian should be imprisoned simply for holding a different political ideology or opposing the government of the day.

“Following my return to the country from Umrah, I led a delegation on a solidarity visit to Abubakar Malami, SAN. I wish to serve notice to the authorities detaining former Governor of Kaduna State, Mallam Nasir El-Rufai, and all other political detainees to release them henceforth. No one should be detained simply because they do not share the same ideology or political platform with the government of the day,” Atiku wrote on his X account.

The visit and statement have added momentum to ongoing debates about the treatment of opposition figures in Nigeria and the protection of political freedoms under the current administration.
