About 30 people are feared dead after a canoe carrying farmers capsized on Sunday in Malamawar Yandutse community, Ringim Local Government Area of Jigawa State.

The victims, including men, women and children, were said to be returning from their farms when the canoe overturned while crossing a river.

Witnesses said about 40 people were onboard, sparking fears that the death toll could increase as rescue teams continue search operations.

Local volunteers, divers and emergency responders quickly mobilised to rescue survivors and recover those still missing.

The Director of Planning at the Jigawa State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA), Muhammad Bala Sanusi, confirmed the incident, noting that rescue efforts were still underway and that the exact number of fatalities and survivors had yet to be determined.
