Super Eagles striker Taiwo Awoniyi could face a three-match suspension in the Premier League following his straight red card in Coventry City’s 5-0 defeat to Brighton on Sunday.
Awoniyi was dismissed in the 53rd minute of the encounter at the Coventry Building Society Arena after he caught Brighton defender Maxim De Cuyper with his elbow during an aerial challenge.
The incident was reviewed by the Video Assistant Referee (VAR), but the initial decision to send off the Nigerian forward was upheld.
The dismissal comes only a few months after Awoniyi joined Frank Lampard’s Coventry side from Nottingham Forest during the summer transfer window.
The Nigeria international has featured in three league matches for Coventry so far, playing 181 minutes without finding the back of the net.
Sunday’s red card was also Awoniyi’s first dismissal in the Premier League, having previously maintained a clean disciplinary record during his time in England’s top flight.
He could now miss Coventry’s next three Premier League fixtures if the standard suspension for his dismissal is imposed.
