The presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), Peter Obi, has challenged the Anambra State Government to provide evidence that his administration left behind unpaid debts, salaries, pensions or liabilities owed to contractors.
Obi made the challenge in a statement shared on his official social media page on Monday, responding to claims by the Anambra State Government that his administration left behind inherited financial obligations, including a N2 billion ecological loan.
The former Anambra State governor dismissed the claims as false, stating that his administration cleared historical gratuities and arrears amounting to more than N35 billion.
According to Obi, there were no outstanding salaries, gratuities or pension obligations when he handed over the reins of government. He also said contractors had been fully paid for projects that were completed and duly certified.
Addressing the N2 billion ecological fund, Obi explained that the money was released approximately three months before the end of his tenure to address the erosion crisis in Oko and Umuchiana.
He said he deliberately left the funds untouched for his successor because the money was earmarked specifically for the project.
Peter Obi further stated that the ecological fund was separate from more than N75 billion in savings which he claimed his administration left for the incoming government.
He challenged the state government to provide evidence to contradict his account, saying:
“If anybody can establish anything to the contrary, I will stop campaigning,” Obi said.
