The presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), Peter Obi, has said he qualifies as a billionaire when his wealth is measured in naira, while dismissing claims that he is a US dollar billionaire.
Obi, a former governor of Anambra State, made the clarification during an appearance on the ‘Keeping It Real with Adeola Fayehun’ podcast in the United States.
Responding to questions about his wealth, the NDC candidate explained that billionaire status is commonly measured in US dollars when referring to individuals described as billionaires globally.
According to Obi, while his wealth does not place him in the category of a US dollar billionaire, he considers himself a billionaire when measured in naira.
Obi said: “You know they calculate billionaire in dollars. In naira, yes I am (a billionaire) in naira but not in dollars.
“You know dollars is what they use to measure. Dollars is what they use to measure billionaire, it’s always in dollars but in naira, yes I am. Capital yes.”
Obi is currently in the United States for presidential campaign-related engagements.
