Presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), Peter Obi, has denied authoring a letter purportedly addressed to the Obi of Onitsha, Igwe Nnaemeka Alfred Ugochukwu Achebe, over political and financial matters concerning Anambra State.
The purported letter, which circulated on social media, was presented as a communication from Obi to the traditional ruler amid ongoing discussions surrounding the state’s financial records and political affairs. Reports said the document called for the issues to be addressed through facts, official records and transparency rather than political exchanges or accusations.
However, Obi has rejected the document, describing it as fake and malicious. In a statement posted on X on Saturday, September 19, 2026, the former Anambra State governor said the letter did not originate from him and alleged that the signature attached to it had been forged.
“My attention has been drawn to a fake letter circulating on social media, purportedly written by me to His Majesty, Igwe Nnaemeka Alfred Ugochukwu Achebe, the Obi of Onitsha, concerning political and financial matters in Anambra State.
“This document is entirely false, malicious, and a fabrication by mischievous elements aimed at misleading the public. Furthermore, the signature appended to the letter is completely forged.
“I urge the public and media to disregard this spurious publication. My focus remains steadfastly on issues of national development, accountability, and building a better future for our people, never on cheap fabrications,” Obi wrote.
The purported document, reportedly dated September 19 and titled “The Future of Ndigbo is Bleak,” emerged amid a broader dispute over Anambra State’s financial obligations and records from Obi’s tenure as governor. However, Obi’s latest statement makes clear that he does not recognise the document as an authentic communication from him.
He subsequently urged members of the public and media organisations to disregard the letter and not treat it as a genuine statement of his position.
