Presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), Peter Obi, has raised concerns about his personal safety ahead of the 2027 general elections, saying he is uncertain whether he will still be alive when the election takes place.
Obi made the remarks during an interview on Arise TV on Thursday while discussing the political environment ahead of the elections.
The former Anambra State governor said he had been the subject of petitions and investigations in various places, adding that he remained unsure about what could happen to him as the election approaches.
“As I speak to you, I have also been petitioned, I’ve been investigated everywhere. Like I said before, I’m not even sure whether I’ll still be alive at the end of this,” he said.
Obi said he was placing his trust in God for protection while calling on politicians and political leaders to ensure that the 2027 election season is conducted in a peaceful and democratic atmosphere.
“I’m praying to God for His protection because at this stage, I’m not sure what is happening,” he added.
The former governor also appealed to state governors to allow presidential candidates and other political aspirants to campaign freely in their respective states.
According to Obi, governors are entitled to support candidates of their choice but should equally provide an opportunity for other contestants to engage with voters.
“Some of them will be campaigning for presidency tomorrow. They will be campaigning for other offices tomorrow. Let’s have peace,” he said.
Obi cited his experience as governor of Anambra State, recalling that his administration allowed politicians from opposition parties to campaign in the state, including those backing candidates challenging him.
He urged political actors to prioritise peace and democratic participation as preparations intensify for the 2027 general elections.
