Gunmen on Thursday evening attacked the convoy of Mouktar Lugga, Chief of Staff to the Zamfara State governor, along the Funtua–Gusau highway in what appeared to be a planned ambush.
The incident occurred around 6:16pm near Kucheri village as Lugga was heading back to Gusau from an official assignment.
According to a report by Zagazola Makama, a publication that monitors counter-insurgency activities in the Lake Chad region, the attackers struck simultaneously from both sides of the road, opening fire on the vehicle conveying Lugga, his driver, and two other occupants.
Sources indicated that one of the bullets pierced the windscreen and narrowly missed the driver, while another assailant attempted to shoot at close range, but his weapon failed to discharge.
Despite the intensity of the attack, the driver managed to navigate out of the danger zone, ensuring that all occupants of the convoy escaped unharmed.
