Iran’s national team is still waiting for visas ahead of the upcoming FIFA World Cup, according to the president of the Iranian Football Federation, Mehdi Taj.
The tournament, which will be jointly hosted by the United States, Canada and Mexico, is scheduled to begin on June 11.
Speaking to Iranian state news agency IRNA, Taj revealed that the visa process for the squad remains unresolved despite the competition drawing closer.
“The visa issue has still not been resolved,” he said.
“Tomorrow or the day after, we will have a decisive meeting with FIFA. They must give us guarantees.”
Taj also disclosed that the federation has not received any official update regarding which members of the delegation have been approved for travel.
“We have not received any account from the other side regarding who has been granted visas. No visas have been issued yet.”
The uncertainty comes amid tense relations between the United States and Iran, although both countries are currently observing a month-long ceasefire following recent hostilities.
Meanwhile, thousands of supporters gathered in Tehran on Wednesday to bid farewell to the Iranian squad before their departure for the tournament.
Iran are scheduled to face New Zealand on June 15 and Belgium on June 21 in Los Angeles before taking on Egypt on June 26 in Seattle. The team is expected to camp in Tucson, Arizona, during the competition.
