The Nigeria Revenue Service, in partnership with the Joint Revenue Board, has announced the introduction of a new Taxpayer Identification (Tax ID) system for all taxable individuals in Nigeria as part of ongoing reforms to modernise tax administration and improve compliance.

The announcement was made in a statement shared via the agency’s official X handle on Monday.

The agency explained that the new policy is backed by Sections 6, 7 and 8 of the Nigeria Tax Administration Act, 2025, which requires every taxable person in the country to obtain a Tax ID.

According to the revenue authority, the new identification system is designed to streamline tax operations, enhance transparency, and improve coordination between federal and state-level tax bodies.

It stated that the Tax ID will serve as a single, unified identity for taxpayers, making it easier to interact with tax authorities across different levels of government.

“The Tax ID will serve as a single, unified identity for all taxpayers, enabling seamless interaction with tax authorities at both federal and sub-national levels,” the agency said.

The NRS added that the system will also help eliminate duplication of taxpayer records and ensure more efficient management of tax data nationwide.

“The initiative will simplify tax compliance processes, including registration, tax filing, and payment procedures,” it added.
