The governorship candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Lagos State, Dr Obafemi Hamzat, has announced former Nigerian High Commissioner to Ghana, Senator Musiliu Obanikoro, as the Director-General of his campaign ahead of the 2027 governorship election.
The appointment was disclosed during an expanded meeting of the campaign council held on Wednesday and presided over by Hamzat.
Sources within the campaign structure said the choice of Obanikoro had already received the approval of President Bola Tinubu before it was formally unveiled.
According to insiders, his selection was based on his long-standing political experience and deep involvement in electoral strategy, having played key roles in several political administrations over the years.
It was also gathered that the decision was widely accepted within the campaign council, with members reportedly expressing confidence in his ability to lead the campaign effectively.
Obanikoro is regarded as one of Lagos State’s most experienced politicians, having held several elective and appointive positions.
He previously served as Chairman of Lagos Island Local Government and was appointed Commissioner for Home Affairs and Culture in 1999 under then-Governor Bola Tinubu, a position he held for four years before becoming a senator.
He later served as Nigeria’s High Commissioner to Ghana following his stint as a governorship candidate in Lagos under the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).
In addition, he has held ministerial positions, including Minister of State for Defence and Minister of State for Foreign Affairs under former President Goodluck Jonathan.
A prominent Lagos political figure and former elected secretary of the Justice Forum, Obanikoro is widely considered to bring extensive political experience and strategic capacity to his new role in the campaign structure.
