Douye Diri, Governor of Bayelsa State, has taken sweeping disciplinary action following the relegation of Bayelsa United from the Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL), dissolving the club’s board and management as well as terminating the contracts of all players.
The decision comes after the Yenagoa-based club’s poor campaign ended in relegation despite what was described as substantial financial backing from the state government throughout the season.
Government officials said the move was aimed at enforcing accountability and addressing the issues responsible for the club’s underwhelming performance.
The governor reportedly ordered that the dissolution take immediate effect as the state begins preparations for a full restructuring ahead of Bayelsa United’s participation in the Nigeria National League (NNL) next season.
A new management structure is expected to be put in place in the coming days, with the government signalling its determination to rebuild the team and secure a swift return to the top flight.
