Former Ogun Central Senator Iyabo Obasanjo has made a swift return to the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), just days after officially resigning from the All Progressives Congress (APC).
The daughter of former President Olusegun Obasanjo rejoined the opposition party on Monday at the PDP secretariat in Abeokuta during the unveiling of Alhaja Yemi Sowunmi-Kolapo as the party’s deputy governorship candidate for the 2027 election.
Party members welcomed Obasanjo enthusiastically as she made her first public appearance with the PDP after recently returning from the United States.
Addressing supporters at the event, she expressed confidence that the PDP would emerge victorious in the 2027 Ogun governorship race, throwing her weight behind the party’s candidate, Oladipupo Adebutu.
Although she declined to go into details about her exit from the APC, Obasanjo suggested she had unresolved issues she intends to address at a later date.
“I actually have a lot to say, there are many people that we shall call out, but I won’t say anything now until you organise that official welcome back into the party.
“However, I want to greet our deputy governorship candidate. I am convinced that you will be our next deputy governor. I want to thank our incoming governor from 2027, Hon Oladipupo Adebutu, because he has really tried to become the governor of the state for the first, second and third time.
“But this time, God is saying that he will be our next governor now that I am joining the party,” she said.
Obasanjo’s return to the PDP comes less than a week after she announced her departure from the APC, accusing the party’s leadership of sidelining her and subjecting her to rejection, maltreatment and a lack of respect.
