Scotland suffered a narrow 1-0 defeat to Morocco after conceding barely 70 seconds into the match, but their hopes of reaching the World Cup knockout stage remain alive heading into their final Group C fixture.
Steve Clarke’s side knew that avoiding defeat would put them in a strong position to qualify, but disaster struck almost immediately. A defensive lapse allowed Morocco midfielder Ismael Saibari to burst through and fire home, giving the African champions an early advantage.
Clarke had made several changes to the team that defeated Haiti, including deploying Kieran Tierney on the left side of midfield in an attempt to limit the influence of Morocco captain Achraf Hakimi. However, the plan unraveled quickly as Grant Hanley and Jack Hendry were caught out, leaving Saibari free to score.
The early setback silenced the passionate Scotland supporters at Boston Stadium, who had arrived full of hope after their side’s encouraging start to the tournament. Despite Morocco’s dominance and superior quality throughout much of the game, Scotland managed to stay in contention.
John McGinn came closest to equalising before halftime, but the midfielder failed to convert at the back post. He remained Scotland’s biggest threat after the restart and appealed for a penalty, only for referee Ilgiz Tantashev to wave play on.
Morocco continued to create chances, but Scotland survived thanks to a crucial block from Hendry and a brilliant save by goalkeeper Angus Gunn to deny Bilal El Khannouss.
Scotland had further penalty appeals turned down in the closing stages, while Scott McTominay saw a deflected effort hit the side netting and substitute Lyndon Dykes headed wide as Clarke’s men searched desperately for an equaliser.
In the end, Morocco held firm to secure a 1-0 victory, leaving Scotland with work still to do in their quest for a historic place in the knockout rounds.
