Argentine footballer Lucas Trejo has suffered a devastating personal loss after his wife and two children died in the powerful twin earthquakes that struck Venezuela earlier this week.
The heartbreaking news was confirmed on Sunday by Trejo’s club, Club Sport Marítimo La Guaira, a Venezuelan second-division side, which paid tribute to the family in a social media post.
“Club Sport Maritimo La Guaira deeply mourns the irreparable loss of our player’s wife and children,” the club wrote alongside a photo of Trejo, his wife Yanina, and their children, Aaron and Ainhoa.
According to reports, Trejo spent three days searching through the rubble of the collapsed building where his family had been trapped before rescue workers eventually recovered their bodies.
The 38-year-old footballer was attending his club’s training camp in Caracas when the twin earthquakes, measuring 7.2 and 7.5 in magnitude, struck on Wednesday evening.
He immediately rushed back to his home in La Guaira, one of the areas hardest hit by the disaster, only to find the building completely destroyed.
“He found absolutely nothing of what the building itself had been,” Trejo’s brother-in-law, Ricardo Ardiles, said.
Venezuelan authorities said nearly 1,500 people have lost their lives in the disaster, while tens of thousands remain missing as search and rescue efforts continue.
