The Federal Government has announced plans to phase out the traditional khaki uniform worn by National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) members and replace it with uniforms made from locally produced Adire fabric.
Minister of Youth Development, Ayodele Olawande, made the announcement during an appearance on Channels Television’s The Morning Brief on Thursday.
He said the move forms part of the government’s efforts to encourage local production, strengthen Nigeria’s textile industry and ensure public funds are spent on goods manufactured within the country.
“It’s Adire. So, Adire is being produced in Nigeria. We have them in Ogun, we have them in Kwara, we have textile industry. Let’s put our money back into the country,” he said.
According to the minister, the policy is expected to boost indigenous businesses and create more opportunities for local textile producers.
Olawande also disclosed that the Federal Government is working on reforms to the NYSC deployment process so that corps members will be posted to places that align with their fields of study and professional expertise.
