FIFA has opened an investigation after American streamer IShowSpeed was allegedly racially abused during Argentina’s FIFA World Cup Round of 32 match against Cabo Verde at Hard Rock Stadium in Miami on July 3.
The 21-year-old streamer, whose real name is Darren Watkins Jr., was livestreaming from the stands while wearing a Cabo Verde jersey when a woman in an Argentina shirt allegedly directed a racist remark at him.
During the livestream, IShowSpeed appeared confused by the comment and asked his viewers to explain what had been said. Reports later claimed the supporter said in Spanish, “Go cry at the zoo,” a statement widely condemned as racist.
The clip quickly spread across social media, prompting FIFA to launch an investigation.
In a statement, the world football governing body said it had been made aware of the incident and immediately began looking into the matter.
“FIFA strongly condemns racism, hate and discrimination in all forms. These actions have no place in football, at the FIFA World Cup, or anywhere in society,” the statement read.
FIFA also reaffirmed that the World Cup is built on the values of unity, diversity and respect, adding that anyone who undermines those principles has no place in football.
