Jude Bellingham scored twice, including the decisive extra-time goal, as England defeated Norway 2-1 at Miami Stadium on Saturday to book a place in the FIFA World Cup semi-finals for only the fourth time in their history.
Norway struck first in the 36th minute through a stunning effort from Andreas Schjelderup after Patrick Berg won possession from Harry Kane and launched a swift counterattack. England responded just before the break, with Bellingham weaving into the box to level the score before half-time.
The match remained tied after 90 minutes, forcing extra time. Just three minutes into the additional period, Morgan Rogers unleashed a powerful long-range shot that Norwegian goalkeeper Orjan Nyland could only push into Bellingham’s path. The Real Madrid midfielder reacted quickest to slot home the rebound and send England fans into celebration.
The victory sends England into their second World Cup semi-final in the last three tournaments, where they will face either Argentina or Switzerland.
Despite the defeat, Norway impressed throughout the contest and can take pride in their first World Cup appearance in 28 years. England also ended Erling Haaland’s scoring streak, keeping the striker off the scoresheet for the first time in his last 16 international matches.
Norway had created the better chances before England’s equaliser. After Haaland tested Jordan Pickford with a header, Schjelderup produced a brilliant finish to give his side the lead. Alexander Sorloth and Martin Odegaard both threatened to extend Norway’s advantage, while Sorloth also missed a golden opportunity after opting not to pass to an unmarked Haaland during a dangerous counterattack late in the first half.
