The African Democratic Congress (ADC) has called for the resignation of Professor Joash Amupitan, Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), accusing the commission of siding with the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) ahead of the 2027 general elections.

Speaking to journalists in Abuja on Thursday, Senator David Mark criticized INEC’s recent decision to derecognize the ADC’s leadership, saying the party no longer trusts the commission to conduct free and fair elections.

“We demand the immediate resignation or removal of INEC Chairman Professor Amupitan and all National Commissioners. We have lost confidence in them and are convinced they cannot oversee any credible election,” Mark said.

He emphasized that the ADC would continue its party activities, noting that INEC’s attendance is not a legal requirement. “We have duly served INEC notice, and we will proceed accordingly,” he stated.

Mark also appealed to the international community to observe INEC’s actions on April 1 and to recognize the threat to Nigeria’s democracy. He called for accountability for those undermining the integrity of the electoral process.

Addressing Nigerians directly, he said: “We call on Nigerians to defend our democracy. This is a defining moment. Stand firm. Speak out. Participate. Resist any attempt to impose a one-party state on Nigeria. Nigeria belongs to all of us, and together, we must protect it.”
