Real Madrid suffered a 2-1 defeat to Bayern Munich in the first leg of their Champions League quarter-final clash at the Bernabeu on Tuesday night.

Bayern started strongly and nearly took an early lead in the second minute when Joshua Kimmich set up Konrad Laimer, but his effort sailed over the bar. The visitors continued to press, with Alvaro Carreras producing a crucial goal-line clearance to deny Dayot Upamecano.

Manuel Neuer was kept busy at the other end, making a series of impressive saves to stop Kylian Mbappe and Vinicius Junior, as Madrid pushed forward in search of an opener.

Bayern eventually broke the deadlock in the 41st minute after a well-worked team move, with Luis Diaz calmly finishing past Andriy Lunin. They doubled their advantage shortly after the restart when Michael Olise set up Harry Kane, who slotted home to make it 2-0.

Madrid kept pushing and were rewarded in the 73rd minute when Mbappe tapped into an empty net from a low cross by Trent Alexander-Arnold, reducing the deficit.

Bayern had chances to extend their lead, with Jamal Musiala missing a clear opportunity late on, but the match ended 2-1 in their favour. The result leaves the tie finely balanced ahead of the second leg at the Allianz Arena next Wednesday.
