Igbinedion Education Centre in Benin City has expelled several students after a viral video showed them brutally assaulting a fellow student, sparking outrage across social media.

The incident reportedly took place inside a classroom, where the victim was repeatedly beaten and flogged by other students. In the video, two students were seen kicking, hitting, and dragging the victim on the floor while other voices pleaded for the attackers to stop.

One of the students involved appeared physically larger and was believed to be a senior. At one point, he stamped on the victim’s head, before another taller student took over, continuing the assault by kicking him, dragging him, and jumping on his ribs. A student recording the scene was also heard begging for the attack to end.

In a statement released Friday night, the school confirmed that the students responsible had been expelled immediately. The management described the video as “deeply disturbing” and stressed that the behavior violated the institution’s core values and standards.

The school reiterated its zero-tolerance policy on bullying, intimidation, harassment, cultism, and all forms of violence. “Our priority remains the safety, dignity, and wellbeing of every student. We are providing support to those affected and are working closely with their families to ensure the matter is addressed with the seriousness it deserves,” the statement read.

The school added that the incident had been reported to the relevant authorities, and, recognizing that the students involved are minors, it is cooperating fully.

Human rights activist Kola Edokpayi condemned the assault, describing it as “man’s inhumanity to man” and urging strict sanctions to deter similar behavior in other students.

The Edo State Police Command has called on the victim and his family to come forward and lodge a formal complaint.
