Former Kaduna State governor Nasir El-Rufai has been taken back into the custody of the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC) after briefly regaining freedom to attend his mother’s burial.

He had earlier been granted compassionate release on March 27, 2026, following his mother’s death in Cairo. The burial was held in Abuja on Sunday, attracting several high-profile political figures.

Upon his return on Tuesday, El-Rufai was brought before the Kaduna State High Court over a separate charge filed by the ICPC. The hearing, however, could not proceed due to the absence of a co-defendant, prompting the court to adjourn the case until April 10, 2026.

He was later moved to the Federal High Court in Kaduna, where his bail application came up for hearing, in line with an earlier scheduled date.

After the court proceedings, El-Rufai was remanded back in ICPC custody as the legal process against him continues.
