World football governing body FIFA has sanctioned both Nigeria and the Democratic Republic of Congo (Congo DR) for breaches of its regulations during their 2026 World Cup qualifier continental playoff.

The Super Eagles of Nigeria were eliminated after losing 4-3 on penalties to Congo DR following a 1-1 draw after extra time. The match saw fans from both countries engage in disorderly conduct that violated FIFA rules.

FIFA’s disciplinary report stated that Nigeria was penalized for breaches related to order and security, including the throwing of objects, which contravenes Article 17.2.b of FIFA’s disciplinary code.

Congo DR was charged for its supporters using laser pointers and similar devices to distract Nigerian players, violating Article 17.2.c and other related provisions.

Nigeria was fined 1,000 Swiss Francs, while Congo DR received a 5,000 Swiss Francs fine. FIFA noted that some disciplinary rulings may be subject to appeal but did not clarify if these particular sanctions are eligible.

The organization also has not commented on Nigeria’s complaint regarding Congo DR’s alleged use of ineligible players during the playoff.

Following the victory, Congo DR qualified for the intercontinental playoff and has announced its squad for the tournament in Mexico later this month, which will determine the final two teams to secure spots at the 2026 World Cup.
