Nigeria is mourning the death of former Nigeria national football team midfielder Henry Nwosu, who passed away at the age of 62.
The news was made public on Saturday by his former teammate, Segun Odegbami, through a post on his media platforms.
“Henry Nwosu passes on!
“After five days in hospital battling for his life, the one I call ‘Youngest Millionaire’ passed on at 4:00 am this morning at the Lagos State University Teaching Hospital, where he had been in intensive care since Wednesday.
“It is with deep pain in my heart that I have to be the conveyor of the news of the death of Henry Nwosu MON. May he rest peacefully with our Creator in Heaven.”
Nwosu, a native of Imo State, was part of Nigeria’s historic squad that lifted the country’s first continental trophy at the 1980 Africa Cup of Nations. He was the youngest member of the team that achieved the milestone on home soil.
Renowned for his intelligence on the ball, creativity, and midfield control, Nwosu became one of the notable figures in Nigeria’s domestic football scene during his playing days.
Following his retirement from professional football, he continued contributing to the sport by working as a coach and guiding young players.
His passing comes just days after the death of former Nigeria national football team coach Adegboye Onigbinde, who died on March 9 at the age of 88. Onigbinde had also managed the Green Eagles in the early 1980s and later led Nigeria to the 2002 FIFA World Cup.
