The Guinea Football Federation has called on the Confederation of African Football to revisit the outcome of the 1976 Africa Cup of Nations, pointing to Morocco’s brief walkout during a decisive match and a recent ruling involving Senegal.

The appeal comes after CAF overturned the result of the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations, sanctioning Senegal for a walkout despite their on-field victory. The decision saw CAF strip Senegal of the title 58 days after the tournament and award it to hosts Morocco.

Guinea insists that the same disciplinary principles should be applied to past competitions. The federation highlighted the final round of AFCON 1976, which was played in a four-team round-robin format.

Heading into the decisive clash, Morocco needed only a draw to secure the trophy, while Guinea had to win. Guinea took the lead in the 33rd minute through Chérif Souleymane. During the match, Moroccan players temporarily left the pitch in protest over a refereeing decision before eventually returning to continue play.

Ahmed Makrouh equalised late in the game, with the match ending 1-1. That result handed Morocco the title with five points, while Guinea finished as runners-up.

Citing CAF’s recent action against Senegal, the Guinean federation argued that the 1976 incident should now be reassessed under similar rules.

“Give us back our 1976 AFCON trophy.”

The federation further maintained that retrospective sanctions should be considered in cases where teams walked off the pitch during matches.
