Atiku Abubakar has declared that he will stand firmly behind whoever emerges as the presidential candidate of the African Democratic Congress for the 2027 general elections.

Speaking in an interview with DW Hausa, the former vice president emphasised the need for unity within the party, insisting that all aspirants must rally around the eventual flag bearer.

“We will support and endorse whoever emerges as the flag bearer. How many are we (presidential aspirants), three or four? In the PDP, more than ten of us contested.”

He highlighted the growing influence of young people within the party, noting that a large number of aspirants contesting positions from the grassroots to the national level are youths.

“The youths have taken over the party. Most of those seeking elective positions, from councillor to state assembly, national assembly and House of Representatives, are young people. We have always said our party belongs to the youth and women. Our role is to create the opportunity and hand it over to them.”

When asked about the possibility of supporting a younger presidential candidate, Atiku made his stance clear.

“Yes, why not?”

He also downplayed concerns surrounding the role of the Independent National Electoral Commission in the party’s internal issues, maintaining that the ADC remains on an upward trajectory despite recent controversies.

According to him, forces unsettled by the party’s rising profile are behind the challenges it currently faces.

Reflecting on his personal life and legacy, he said, “Allah has done everything for me. I have brought my sons and grandchildren home. What will be their future and that of their children?”

He added that Nigerians are increasingly calling for a new direction, citing economic hardship and insecurity as major concerns driving the demand for change.
