The Independent National Electoral Commission has officially recognised the faction of the Peoples Democratic Party led by Nyesom Wike, marking a major shift in the party’s ongoing leadership dispute.
INEC updated the PDP’s leadership details on its official website, confirming Abdulrahman Mohammed as National Chairman. Mohammed and other members of the NWC were elected at a national convention held Sunday at the velodrome of Moshood Abiola National Stadium in Abuja.
The recognition comes amid a deepening split within the PDP, with a rival faction led by Kabiru Turaki seeking to block the Wike-backed group’s convention through the Supreme Court. Despite the legal challenge, the convention went ahead, producing a complete slate of national officers.
At the event, Wike hailed the outcome as a victory for the party, saying the PDP had overcome a leadership crisis that threatened its stability. He commended loyal members for reclaiming the party’s structure and restoring internal democracy.
“Party members resisted efforts to deepen ethnic and regional divisions. The PDP has been returned to its rightful owners — the people,” Wike said, adding that grassroots supporters remained steadfast despite “the infidelity of opportunistic elite.”
