The Independent National Electoral Commission has put on hold all public announcements and operational plans tied to the proposed nationwide voter revalidation exercise.
The move follows the commission’s earlier announcement scheduling the exercise to begin on April 13 as part of preparations for updating the voter register ahead of the 2027 general elections.
In a communication dated April 4, 2026, titled “Notice of Meeting with Resident Electoral Commissioners (Virtual)” and signed by its Secretary, Rose Oriaran-Anthony, INEC instructed all Resident Electoral Commissioners to suspend ongoing publicity and arrangements pending further instructions.
“RECs are also directed to step down all publicity and arrangements for the voter revalidation exercise and await further directives from the commission.”
However, the commission made it clear that internal groundwork should continue, directing officials to proceed with essential preparations such as mobilising personnel and readying voter enrolment devices for the exercise.
