Iran has confirmed that Major General Majid Khatami, the intelligence chief of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC), was killed at dawn on April 6, 2026, in an attack carried out by US and Israeli forces. The assassination is considered one of the most significant strikes in the ongoing conflict, directly targeting the core of Iran’s military intelligence and covert operations.
Who Was Majid Khatami
Majid Khatami headed IRGC Intelligence, the branch responsible for Iran’s military counterintelligence, internal security, foreign intelligence, and coordination of covert operations across the Middle East. Unlike Iran’s civilian Ministry of Intelligence and Security, IRGC Intelligence operates as both an internal security force and the IRGC’s external covert operations arm.
Under his command, the directorate coordinated intelligence for missile and drone campaigns against Israel, Gulf states, and US targets. It also monitored US and Israeli military activity, managed IRGC proxies in Iraq, Syria, Lebanon, and Yemen, and identified threats to the IRGC’s leadership and operations.
Khatami’s killing deals a significant blow to Iran’s intelligence capabilities and marks a direct strike at the strategic center of the IRGC’s military operations.
