Nigerian actor and filmmaker Olaide Olabanji has publicly criticised fellow actress Mercy Aigbe, accusing her of turning against him despite his claimed contribution to her early success in Nollywood.
During a recent chat with media personality Oyinmomo, Olabanji said their once cordial relationship fell apart after Aigbe became a top figure in the Yoruba film scene.
He alleged that her attitude towards him changed significantly, describing her actions as “wickedness” and claiming she now reacts negatively whenever she sees him or even comes across his image. He went as far as alleging that she harbours deep resentment toward him and “wishes he were dead.”
Recounting their early connection, Olabanji said he first met Aigbe in 2004 at a shop and introduced her to acting. “I saw her in a shop in 2004 and asked her if she could act. She said yes, and I put her on. I brought Mercy Aigbe into the movie industry. I helped her,” he said.
He added that the relationship has since broken down completely, claiming she now avoids and blocks him. “Now she is blocking me. To her, it is as if I should no longer exist.”
Olabanji also expressed frustration over what he described as a pattern among some women in the industry, saying fame often changes their behaviour. He noted that Aigbe, who he once knew to be friendly and approachable, now appears distant and unfriendly whenever they encounter each other.
