Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu has authorized the release of 43 inmates from correctional centres across the state as part of ongoing efforts to reduce overcrowding and enhance criminal justice reforms.

This latest move follows a similar exercise in December 2025, during which 91 inmates were granted freedom under the same initiative.

In a statement on Wednesday, Attorney-General and Commissioner for Justice Lawal Pedro (SAN) said the release was carried out under the governor’s constitutional powers provided by Section 212 of the 1999 Constitution (as amended), which allows for the exercise of the prerogative of mercy.

The statement noted that the State Advisory Council on the Prerogative of Mercy recommended the inmates for release after careful review in line with legal and administrative procedures.

Pedro highlighted that the exercise demonstrates the state government’s commitment to justice, fairness, and the rule of law. He said it also aims to improve conditions in correctional centres and facilitate the smoother movement of inmates to courts, ensuring quicker trials and more efficient administration of justice.
