A building collapse in Jikwoyi, within the Abuja Municipal Area Council of the Federal Capital Territory, has left several people injured after a three-storey structure under construction suddenly caved in.
The Federal Capital Territory Emergency Management Department (FEMD) confirmed that 17 workers were present on the top floor when the incident occurred. While nine of them managed to escape unhurt, others sustained varying degrees of injuries.
Providing details, the agency’s Head of Public Affairs, Nkechi Isa, said rescue teams were immediately deployed to the site to prevent anyone from being left trapped under the debris.
“The FEMD search and rescue team said 17 workers were on the upper floor of the building when it collapsed, injuring five workers and trapping a lone male who was at the ground level of the building,” she stated.
She added that the injured victims, along with the man rescued from beneath the rubble, were taken to the Sisters of Nativity Hospital in Jikwoyi, where they are currently receiving treatment and responding positively.
