US President Donald Trump announced on Monday that the United States and Iran have engaged in “productive” discussions over the weekend aimed at de-escalating ongoing hostilities.

In a post on Truth Social, Trump revealed that he has ordered a temporary halt to planned US military strikes targeting Iranian power and energy infrastructure.

“I am pleased to report that the United States of America, and the country of Iran, have had, over the last two days, very good and productive conversations regarding a complete and total resolution of our hostilities in the Middle East,” he said.

Trump added that, based on the tone and progress of the talks, he instructed the Department of War to suspend any strikes on Iranian power facilities for a five-day period, contingent on the success of ongoing discussions.

The announcement follows a weekend of heightened tensions, during which Trump warned that the US military would “obliterate” Iran’s power facilities if Tehran failed to reopen the Strait of Hormuz within 48 hours. The Strait is a crucial channel for global oil shipments.

The temporary pause comes amid international concerns over the potential economic fallout of a US-Iran escalation, including its effects on global oil prices and inflation.
