Nigerian singer Orezi has opened up emotionally while marking his late father’s posthumous 76th birthday, using the moment to reflect on personal loss and the harsh realities of Nigeria’s economy.
In posts shared on April 8, the singer revealed he spent the day feeling low, admitting that losing his father remains a pain he still struggles with. He prayed for strength for himself and his family as they continue to cope with the loss.
“Yesterday April 8th would have been my late dad’s 76th birthday. Yesterday I was sad and moody. The loss of a father is painful. I guess this pain will never go away. I pray God continues to give me and my family the strength to manage this big loss.”
Orezi also expressed concern about the country’s worsening situation, linking it to the growing trend of Nigerians relocating abroad for survival. He said a conversation with his younger brother in Canada made the reality even more painful, noting the strain it puts on families.
“The state of Nigeria is so bad that people are continually embracing japa for survival, the damage this does to family unit can’t be over emphasized. The multifaceted effects of our useless and corrupt leaders. Leaders that make decisions that breaks the average Nigerian citizen. They have totally wiped out the middle class.”
He questioned how citizens manage to survive on low incomes and warned about the impact of professionals leaving the country.
“Sometimes I wonder how people get by in this Nigeria. I wonder how people that earn 70k, even 150k survive. Doctors don japa finish. Very soon na we go dey treat ourself for hospital.”
The singer also shared a painful reflection about his father’s death, suggesting that better healthcare abroad might have made a difference.
“Wetin kill my papa if he dey abroad he for no die. Happy 76th posthumous birthday. Love you forever.”
Reflecting on his journey, Orezi recalled choosing music against his father’s wishes after graduating from the University of Lagos, revealing he struggled for years without income before finding his path. He added that he is now determined to push harder, especially as more people reach out to him for financial help amid rising hardship.
“These days I wake up to different people begging me for money… the country is so messed up people are dying of poverty everyday. I need to make more money. Our leaders are stealing money everyday nobody dey go jail. How country wan take better? A fvcking banana republic, thief no fit catch thief.”
