Former Labour Party (LP) presidential running mate, Datti Baba-Ahmed, has explained his decision to distance himself from Peter Obi, saying the former Anambra State governor does not have a clear plan for Nigeria.
Datti served as Obi’s running mate on the Labour Party ticket during the 2023 presidential election.
Following the election, Obi left the Labour Party and joined the African Democratic Congress (ADC), where he later became associated with the party’s presidential bid under the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC).
However, Datti said he would not deliberately undermine President Bola Tinubu by supporting Obi and former Vice President Atiku Abubakar without what he considers sufficient justification.
Speaking in an interview with Symfoni TV, Datti said:
“I won’t unfairly help promote Baba Atiku and Peter Obi and others just for no good reason because we need to be fair in life, and that’s what I stand for.
“I worked really hard for Peter Obi, but his team doesn’t remember things very well. I let Peter Obi know that he needs to come up with a plan since he doesn’t have one yet.
“Peter Obi didn’t abandon me; I left because he doesn’t have a plan for Nigeria. Peter Obi knows I stood for him. I still stand by him. It’s sad to see the moves he made. But it is his choice.”
Datti’s comments provide further insight into his political position following his separation from Obi, despite his acknowledgment of their previous political partnership and his continued personal support for the former Labour Party presidential candidate.
