Former Miss Universe Nigeria, Chidimma Adetshina, returned to the Cape Town Regional Court on Thursday as her legal battle against deportation from South Africa continued.
Adetshina was arrested by South African immigration officials on June 6, 2026, over allegations that she was living in the country without valid immigration documents. She first appeared in court on June 9 and was released on warning while the case was adjourned.
At Thursday’s hearing, the beauty queen was expected to file an affidavit detailing the steps she had taken to regularise her immigration status. The document is a key part of her defence against the South African Department of Home Affairs, which is seeking her deportation.
The department maintains that Adetshina and her young son have no legal right to remain in South Africa, alleging that she re-entered the country after being declared a prohibited person in December 2024. The claims are yet to be determined by the court.
Adetshina’s immigration case follows the controversy surrounding her citizenship during the 2024 Miss South Africa pageant.
Born in South Africa to a Nigerian father and a Mozambican mother, she withdrew from the competition after government investigations questioned her mother’s identity documents.
She later accepted an invitation to contest the Miss Universe Nigeria pageant, which she won, before representing Nigeria at the Miss Universe competition in Mexico, where she finished as first runner-up.
