Nigeria’s First Lady, Oluremi Tinubu, has said she will proudly wear an Akwete buba and wrapper if President Bola Tinubu is re-elected for a second term in office.
She made the remark on Tuesday during her first visit to the Akwete Weaving Cooperative Village in Abia State, where she also announced a ₦2 billion donation to help revive the famous local weaving industry.
Speaking to the women at the cooperative, she said:
“If God brings my husband in a second time, I’ll be wearing a buba and wrapper made from Akwete. I am going to be wearing that because it is very soft breathable cotton.
“I saw young people in their family doing exact thing. So it is a craft transferred from generation.”
The First Lady praised the women for keeping the centuries-old weaving tradition alive and encouraged Nigerians to embrace Akwete fabric and other Igbo traditional attire as a way of supporting local artisans.
She also explained that she deliberately avoided delivering a prepared speech because she wanted the visit to be more personal, choosing instead to spend time interacting with the women rather than following a formal programme.
