Media personality and actress Toke Makinwa has shared why she no longer buys gifts for men she dates, saying a painful experience from her university days changed her outlook on relationships.
Speaking on a recent episode of her Toke Moments podcast with reality TV star Beauty Tukura, Makinwa recalled dating a man who was 10 years older than her while she was an undergraduate.
She revealed that she spent her semester’s school fees to organise a special birthday celebration for him, including taking him to an Italian restaurant in Victoria Island.
However, she said the relationship ended in heartbreak after she discovered another woman at his home shortly after the celebration.
According to Makinwa, the incident deeply affected her and made her decide never to buy gifts for romantic partners again.
She said:
“I stopped buying men gifts after I dated a man who was 10 years older than me. I spent my university semester’s school fees to celebrate his birthday and took him to an Italian restaurant in Victoria Island.
“He ordered everything on the menu. When we got home…there was another woman in his house. That broke me.”
