Bangladesh’s President, Mohammed Shahabuddin, has officially stepped down from office, attributing his resignation to declining health that has left him unable to continue serving as the country’s head of state.
The 76-year-old said his worsening physical and mental condition influenced his decision to leave office before the completion of his term, which was due to end in 2028.
In a letter submitted to the Speaker of Parliament, Shahabuddin stated that his health no longer allowed him to effectively carry out the constitutional responsibilities of the presidency.
Shahabuddin, widely known as “Chuppu,” assumed office in 2023 after securing parliamentary backing from the Awami League, the political party of former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina.
His position came under intense scrutiny after Hasina was removed from power during the 2024 student-led protests, with many critics demanding his resignation because of his close ties to her government.
Months earlier, the president had rejected claims that he held discussions with Hasina while receiving medical treatment in London.
Interestingly, Home Minister Salahuddin Ahmed had said only a day earlier that authorities had not received any official notice indicating the president intended to resign.
