Afrobeats singer David Adeleke, better known as Davido, has waded into the political debate surrounding the forthcoming Osun State governorship election, defending his uncle, Governor Ademola Adeleke, against criticism from Edo State Governor Monday Okpebholo.
Davido spoke in Osogbo on Friday during the “VOTE, NOT FIGHT” campaign, an initiative urging residents to reject violence and embrace peaceful participation ahead of the August 15 election.
The singer also appealed to President Bola Tinubu to ensure that the election is conducted fairly, while urging voters to exercise their rights peacefully.
His remarks followed comments by Okpebholo concerning Governor Adeleke’s reputation for dancing. Davido dismissed the criticism, arguing that there was nothing wrong with the Osun governor expressing himself through dancing.
He took a swipe at the Edo governor, suggesting that Okpebholo’s criticism was unnecessary.
Davido said:
“Mr Monday Okpebholo, you don see small money now, your voice no dey shake again abi? You’re talking about my governor that all he does is dance. Is there any problem in dancing? Na because you no get talent na. You can talk anyhow.”
Beyond defending his uncle, Davido also praised the Ademola Adeleke administration, insisting that his support was not simply because of their family connection.
According to the singer, the state government had followed through on commitments made to residents and delivered several of the projects it promised.
He said he was encouraged by the support Adeleke has received from people across Osun State and urged them to remain firm.
“I’m happy that the Osun people have stood with us and have stood firm. It’s not only because of Adeleke but because this government has been doing a good job. All the projects we promised, we’ve been delivering it,” Davido said.
