A protest broke out on Wednesday at Kwara State Polytechnic after reports that Economic and Financial Crimes Commission operatives were in the area sparked fear and confusion among students.

Eyewitnesses and social media videos showed students fleeing in panic, with claims that an officer chased a student, intensifying tension on campus. In response, students set tyres ablaze along Old Jebba Road leading to the institution to voice their anger and frustration.

One student, who requested anonymity, said, “We suddenly saw people running in different directions. Nobody really understood what was happening at first, but the presence of armed operatives created fear across the campus.” Another added, “It is wrong for such operations to take place when students are writing exams. It disrupted the entire atmosphere and left many of us shaken.”

When reporters visited the campus, ashes from the burnt tyres were still visible at the entrance, while security had been strengthened. A police van from the Oke-Oyi Division was stationed at the main gate to prevent further escalation.

The Polytechnic’s management later reassured the public that calm had returned, clarifying that the EFCC operation occurred in the nearby Agbede village and not within the campus. “No arrests of students were made during the security operation,” the statement said.

The demonstration underscores student concerns over unexpected security operations during exams and the resulting disruption to campus life.
