Former Senator Dino Melaye, a key figure in the African Democratic Congress (ADC), has accused President Bola Tinubu of aiming for a “coronation” instead of a genuine democratic contest in the 2027 general election.
Speaking on Channels Television’s breakfast show on Thursday, Melaye also claimed that the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) is increasingly unsettled by the growing influence of the ADC.
“President Bola Tinubu wants to be coronated; he doesn’t want an election,” Melaye said.
He alleged that the APC is alarmed by an apparent shift of politicians and supporters from other parties to the ADC, reflecting insecurity despite the party’s claims of nationwide dominance.
“The APC has become so desperate. They’ve seen that the ADC is the only party in the Federal Republic of Nigeria that can challenge them. They’ve seen an exodus of movement from other parties into the ADC, and personally, I am shocked that they are scared. You say you have 32 governors, then why are you afraid?” he added.
Melaye insisted that the current political tensions extend beyond the ADC, framing them as a broader test of Nigeria’s democratic health. “So, it is not about the ADC; it is about democracy,” he said.
