The Benue State Police Command has confirmed the killing of nine residents following a violent Easter Day raid on Mbatsada, a settlement in Mbalom community within Gwer East Local Government Area. Several others were also reported injured in the assault.
Suspected armed herders are believed to be behind the attack, which has further intensified worries over the recurring wave of insecurity in the state.
According to a statement by the command’s spokesperson, Udeme Edet, security operatives were mobilised immediately after distress calls were received from the community.
A joint team later carried out a search operation in the area, recovering nine bodies that were subsequently deposited at the General Hospital in Aliade.
Initial investigations suggest the violence may be tied to growing tensions within the community, although the exact cause of the clash remains unclear.
In response, the Deputy Commissioner of Police in charge of Operations and the Area Commander in Gboko have been deployed to lead security efforts and restore order.
The State Criminal Investigation Department has begun a comprehensive probe, while tactical units, including the Police Mobile Force, have been sent out to pursue those responsible.
The Commissioner of Police, Ifeanyi Emenari, assured residents of continued efforts to protect lives and property, urging them to stay calm and cooperate with authorities by providing useful information as investigations continue.
