The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has threatened to shut down academic activities in public universities across Nigeria if the Federal Government and state governments fail to address the union’s outstanding demands.
The warning was contained in a statement issued on Friday by ASUU President, Christopher Piwuna, following growing concerns over the government’s failure to fully implement agreements reached with the union.
ASUU said it could resume industrial action “without any further notice” if the government fails to complete the implementation of the December 2025 agreement.
The union also raised concerns over the non-remittance of billions of naira deducted from lecturers’ salaries, among other unresolved issues affecting university academics.
The latest development followed an emergency meeting of ASUU’s National Executive Council held at the University of Abuja.
According to the union, the December 2025 agreement was reached after more than eight years of negotiations and struggles. However, ASUU alleged that the agreement had yet to be fully implemented by the Federal Government and several state governments.
The union maintained that immediate action was required to address issues relating to the welfare and well-being of Nigerian academics.
“Unless immediate and concrete steps are taken to fully and comprehensively address issues bordering on the welfare and well-being of Nigerian academics, ASUU-NEC will not accept any blame for calling out its members on a nationwide strike action within the shortest time possible,” the union warned.
The threat has raised fresh concerns over the possibility of another disruption to academic activities in Nigeria’s public universities if the outstanding issues are not resolved.
