Argentine football icon Lionel Messi has taken ownership of Catalan side UE Cornellà, marking a new chapter in his career off the pitch.

The 38-year-old, widely regarded as one of the greatest players in football history, is currently playing for Inter Miami CF in the United States. His latest move sees him expand his influence into club ownership, further strengthening his long-standing connection with Catalonia.

Confirming the development, Cornellà announced that the “eight-time Ballon d’Or winner Leo Messi has formalised the acquisition of the club,” which competes in Spain’s fifth tier.

They added that the move highlights his enduring bond with Barcelona and his dedication to nurturing grassroots football and local talent in the region.

Messi’s ties to Catalonia date back to his teenage years when he moved from Argentina to join FC Barcelona at just 13. He made his senior debut at 17 in October 2004 and went on to enjoy a historic career with the club, scoring a record 672 goals in 778 appearances while winning multiple trophies, including four UEFA Champions League titles and 10 La Liga crowns.

After leaving Barcelona in 2021, he spent time at Paris Saint-Germain before joining Inter Miami in 2023.

Meanwhile, his long-time rival Cristiano Ronaldo has also ventured into club ownership, having acquired a 25 percent stake in UD Almería earlier this year.
