Coventry City have secured promotion to the Premier League after a 25-year absence, following a 1-1 draw against Blackburn Rovers at Ewood Park on Friday.

Frank Lampard’s side only needed a point to confirm their return to the top flight, and they achieved it in dramatic fashion, with Bobby Thomas heading in a late equaliser to seal the result.

Blackburn had gone ahead shortly after the restart through a deflected strike from Ryoya Morishita, briefly threatening to delay Coventry’s promotion celebrations.

However, Coventry responded under pressure, and Thomas’s late header triggered jubilant scenes both on the pitch and among the 7,500 travelling supporters.

The result leaves Coventry top of the Championship with 86 points from 43 matches, mathematically securing promotion with three games remaining. Millwall sit third and can no longer catch them, while Ipswich Town, Southampton and Middlesbrough continue battling for the second automatic promotion spot.

Lampard described the moment as emotional, praising the effort of the players and the loyalty of the fans, as Coventry finally ended their long wait to return to the Premier League.
