Political and civil rights activist Aisha Yesufu has announced her resignation from the African Democratic Congress and her defection to the Nigeria Democratic Congress ahead of the 2027 general elections.

She made the announcement in a statement shared on her X account on Wednesday, where she also revealed her intention to contest the Federal Capital Territory senatorial seat.

According to her, the decision followed what she described as a clearer understanding of the nation’s political direction and her continued alignment with the vision of former presidential candidate Peter Obi.

“The next couple of days will define the future of this nation. This deeper understanding is why I resigned from the African Democratic Congress (ADC) to join the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) as I follow the leadership of HE Peter Obi, who today embodies the hope and aspiration of a Nigeria that works,” she said.

Yesufu explained that her earlier support for Obi influenced her move to the ADC, adding that her latest switch was part of a continued commitment to that political alignment.

“When I give my word, I keep it. My decision to support HE Peter Obi first led me to the ADC. To continue to honour the promise I am joining the NDC,” she added.

She further confirmed her ambition to contest for the FCT senatorial seat under the new platform.

“This time I am joining the NDC not just as a member but as one running for the FCT Senatorial seat.”

Reflecting on her time in the ADC, she described her experience as rewarding, noting that she served in several leadership roles within the party structure and appreciated the opportunity to work with like-minded individuals.
