The Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) has announced that its 2027 presidential ticket will be zoned to the South, with the eventual winner expected to serve a single four-year term.

The decision was taken during the party’s inaugural National Convention, where delegates unanimously backed a motion moved by Afam Victor Ogene, a member of the House of Representatives representing Ogbaru Federal Constituency in Anambra State.

Under the arrangement, the party also agreed that after the Southern tenure is completed, the presidency will rotate back to the North for another four-year term.

The zoning formula is already generating political interest, as it is seen as a major boost for southern aspirants, including former Anambra State governor and 2023 Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi, should he seek the party’s ticket.

Also linked to the party is former Kano State governor and 2023 presidential candidate of the New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP), Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, who, alongside Obi, recently aligned with the NDC.

Obi reportedly left the African Democratic Congress (ADC) over internal disputes, ongoing court cases, divisions within the party, and alleged external interference.

Kwankwaso, on his part, is a former Governor of Kano State and ex-Minister of Defence who contested the 2023 presidential election under the NNPP platform.
