Mohamed Salah fought back tears as he was given a guard of honour on his Liverpool farewell appearance.
Salah was replaced by Jeremie Frimpong in the 74th minute of Sunday’s clash with Brentford at Anfield, with his Liverpool team-mates forming a line to clap him off the pitch.
The Egyptian superstar hugged each one of them, and appeared to wipe away a tear as he headed to the touchline where he embraced manager Arne Slot.
Salah had earlier assisted a goal for Curtis Jones at Kop end as the Reds went 1-0 up, before Kevin Schade grabbed an equaliser for the visitors. The assist was Salah’s 93rd for Liverpool in the Premier League, seeing him overtake the 92 recorded by Steven Gerrard.
Moments after Salah’s departure, left-back Andy Robertson was also given his own guard of honour when he was replaced by Milos Kerkez.
Liverpool’s vice-captain – who penned an open letter to the city of Liverpool in Sunday’s ECHO – also departed to hugs from his team-mates.
Both Salah and Robertson have been at Liverpool for nine years having signed in the summer of 2017, with the pair winning two Premier League titles, the Champions League, the FA Cup, two League Cups, the Club World Cup and the European Super Cup.
