President Bola Tinubu has directed all political appointees in his administration who intend to contest the 2027 general elections to step down from their positions by March 31, 2026.

The order, which affects ministers, heads of agencies, and presidential aides, is intended to ensure strict compliance with Nigeria’s electoral laws and protect the integrity of the forthcoming elections.

A circular from the Office of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation (OSGF) explained that the directive is “pursuant to the provisions of Section 88(1) of the Electoral Act, 2026, as well as the timetable issued by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) for party primaries.”

Signed by Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Sen. George Akume, and released by Permanent Secretary Dr. Ibrahim Abubakar Kana, the circular clarifies that the resignation requirement applies to:

  • Ministers and Ministers of State
  • Special Advisers to the President
  • Senior Special Assistants, Special Assistants, and Personal Assistants to the President
  • Directors-General and Chief Executive Officers of federal parastatals, agencies, commissions, and government-owned companies
  • Any other political appointees seeking nomination for elective positions

President Tinubu stressed that the move is necessary to “ensure full compliance with electoral laws, uphold transparency in the political process, and promote a level playing field for all aspirants ahead of the elections.”

The directive, conveyed through Dewan Nengak Goshit, Head of Information and Public Relations for the OSGF, requires all affected officials to submit their resignation letters through the SGF’s office no later than the March 31 deadline, aiming to prevent the misuse of public office or resources during party primaries.
